CUR8, a carbon removal credits platform based in London is dedicated to expediting access to reliable carbon removal solutions. Founded in 2022, CUR8 is a climate tech startup that is constructing a platform to purchase carbon removal credits from trusted suppliers. Recently, the company announced securing £5.3 million ($6.5 million) in pre-seed funding, with GV (Google Ventures) leading the investment and CapitalT also participating.

CUR8’s primary focus is to provide carbon removal credits from reputable suppliers, enabling the creation of high-quality portfolios that incorporate various strategies and methods. The company aims to reduce the current industry-standard price of £150 ($180) per ton of CO2 removed, as the sector is experiencing rapid growth and increased accessibility for companies of all sizes.

CUR8’s platform encompasses various carbon removal methods, including enhanced rock weathering, direct air capture, forests, timber for construction, soil enhancement, biochar, and ocean carbon removal. The company aims to establish trust and transparency in an industry that faces challenges such as limited supply, concerns about quality, execution risks, and prohibitive prices.

The founders of CUR8 include Marta Krupinska (serial fintech entrepreneur and co-founder of Azimo, Google for Startups UK lead), Dr. Gabrielle Walker (renowned climate scientist and carbon removals expert, and founder of the non-profit Rethinking Removals), and Mark Stevenson (net-zero expert, author, and former advisor to the UK Ministry of Defense). The rest of the team brings experience from notable organizations like Microsoft and the World Bank.

he company’s mission is to facilitate 10% of global carbon removals over the next 25+ years by establishing critical industry infrastructure. CUR8 conducts in-house supplier due diligence and has developed a rigorous scientific review process that evaluates impact, integrity, and scalability across more than 100 data points to ensure collaboration with the highest quality suppliers.

While the industry continues to grow, CUR8 anticipates the establishment of universally agreed-upon data sources, standards, and methodologies for all carbon removal methods. Currently, the company believes it has developed the most suitable due diligence process for its purposes.
