Chennai has the credit of having the top engineering college of the country, Indian Institute of Technology Madras which has a consistently high ranking, according to the NIRF 2020 ranking of colleges. Anna University with an all India rank of 14 and SRM Institute of Science and Technology with a rank of 41 form the top three on the ranking list for 2020.
Chennai also has five engineering colleges in the top 100 and six engineering colleges in the range of 100 to 200 ranks. It has three colleges in the NIRF ranking range of 201-250, and three more in the ranking range of 251-300.
There are some colleges in Kancheepuram, which is very close to Chennai, though technically not in the city. the list of Kancheepuram or nearby towns like Sriperumbudur and Thiruvallur is not added to the Chennai list but given in the end of the report.
