Assam remains the engineering hub of the Northeast, with its institutions serving both the state and the wider region. In the 2025 NIRF rankings, Assam’s engineering representation was led by the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG), which secured a top 10 national position, continuing its long-standing role as the state’s most prestigious higher education institution. IIT Guwahati has consistently been among the best IITs outside the top metro cluster, excelling in research, industry collaboration, and international linkages.
Beyond IIT Guwahati, Assam’s visibility in the rankings came through the National Institute of Technology Silchar (NIT Silchar), which featured within the top 50 engineering institutions nationally. NIT Silchar has built a solid record in teaching and placements, drawing students from across the Northeast and neighboring states, and it remains one of the strongest NITs in eastern India.
The state also had representation in the 151–200 band, with Tezpur University, Assam. Though primarily a central university with a broader academic portfolio, its engineering faculty has earned consistent recognition in the NIRF lists. Tezpur’s presence signals that Assam’s higher education footprint extends beyond IITs and NITs, bringing in more multidisciplinary institutions.
In the 201–300 band, the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Guwahati continued its presence. Established as part of the IIIT network, it focuses strongly on computer science, IT, and electronics, and though relatively young, it has steadily carved out a place in the rankings.
Together, these institutions show Assam’s tiered structure: IIT Guwahati at the pinnacle, NIT Silchar in the second tier, and Tezpur University and IIIT Guwahati forming a solid supporting layer.
