Uttar Pradesh continues to maintain a visible presence in the national engineering landscape, with several institutions appearing across the NIRF 2025 bands up to 300.
The state’s strength lies in a mix of traditional public universities, IIT (BHU) Varanasi, and a large cluster of private colleges concentrated around Noida, Greater Noida, and Lucknow.
Top 100 Representation
The standout performer for the state is Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University) Varanasi, which holds the 10th rank nationally in the 2025 engineering rankings. This makes it the clear flagship of Uttar Pradesh, continuing a consistent trend of being among the top IITs outside the metros. Another major national-level player is Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Aligarh, which has retained a place inside the top 40, ranked 34th. Amity University, Noida, one of the state’s best-known private universities, also appears strongly in the Top 40, ranked 37th. In addition, Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology, Amethi, is present in the Top 100, placed at 78th, reflecting its niche focus in petroleum and energy studies.
Thus, four institutions from Uttar Pradesh feature within the top 100, with IIT (BHU) anchoring the state’s reputation, and AMU, Amity, and RGIPT adding strength through diversity of institutional types.
Band 101–150
Uttar Pradesh maintains momentum in the 101–150 band. Indian Institute of Information Technology Allahabad (Prayagraj), a centrally funded IIIT, appears in this group, joined by Jaypee Institute of Information Technology (Noida), Galgotias University (Greater Noida), and the state’s central university, University of Allahabad (Prayagraj). This grouping reflects the state’s depth in engineering education, particularly in the Noida–Greater Noida corridor, which has become a hub for private institutions.
Band 151–200
The state’s visibility extends further into the 151–200 range, where Dayalbagh Educational Institute (Agra), GLA University (Mathura), GL Bajaj Institute of Technology and Management (Greater Noida), and KIET Group of Institutions (Ghaziabad) all appear. These are established institutions with strong student intake, serving as important regional anchors.
Band 201–300
Several more institutions extend Uttar Pradesh’s footprint into the 201–300 band. These include Galgotias College of Engineering & Technology (Greater Noida), Harcourt Butler Technical University (Kanpur Nagar), Teerthanker Mahaveer University (Moradabad), and Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Rohilkhand University (Bareilly). Also included are newer or smaller private and state institutions, showing the breadth of submissions from across the state.
Summary
Taken together, Uttar Pradesh has four institutions in the Top 100, several more in the 101–150 and 151–200 bands, and a long tail in the 201–300 group. The combination of a premier IIT, central universities, traditional public universities, and a strong set of private engineering institutions underscores the scale and diversity of the state’s higher education ecosystem. No other northern state, apart from Delhi, has this density of representation across tiers.
