NIRF 2025 rankings: Tamil Nadu engineering colleges performance

Tamil Nadu once again asserted its dominance in Indian engineering education through the 2025 NIRF rankings

Tamil Nadu once again asserted its dominance in Indian engineering education through the 2025 NIRF rankings, both in terms of depth and diversity of institutions. The state had a remarkable presence in the Top 100, with seven institutions securing ranks among the very best nationally.

Leading the charge was Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), Chennai, at the very top with Rank 1, continuing its unbroken streak as the country’s premier engineering institution. Beyond IIT Madras, the state’s representation in the top 20 included Anna University, Chennai (Rank 20) and Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore (Rank 23). Both have long-standing reputations for research and teaching excellence.

Private universities and deemed institutions also made a strong showing: SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai (Rank 14), Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore (Rank 16), Shanmugha Arts Science Technology & Research Academy (SASTRA), Thanjavur (Rank 40), and Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education, Krishnan Koil (Rank 33) were all in the Top 100. Together, these highlight Tamil Nadu’s mix of government, private, and deemed universities in the national spotlight.

The strength of the state becomes even more visible in the rank bands beyond the top 100. In the 101–150 range, Tamil Nadu had a strong cluster including Chennai Institute of Technology, Coimbatore Institute of Technology, College of Engineering Trivandrum (satellite Tamil Nadu presence through affiliations), Easwari Engineering College, Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science, Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences, Kongu Engineering College, KPR Institute of Engineering and Technology, PSG Institute of Technology and Applied Research, Rajalakshmi Engineering College, and Thiagarajar College of Engineering.

In the 151–200 band, institutions like Dr. M. G. R. Educational and Research Institute (Chennai), Kumaraguru College of Technology (Coimbatore), Mepco Schlenk Engineering College (Sivakasi), R.M.K. Engineering College (Thiruvallur), Sona College of Technology (Salem), Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College (Coimbatore), Sri Sai Ram Institute of Technology (Chennai), and Sri Sairam Engineering College (Kancheepuram) held firm.

Tamil Nadu’s presence continues deep into the 201–300 band, which included Annamalai University, E.G.S. Pillay Engineering College (Nagapattinam), Hindusthan College of Engineering and Technology (Coimbatore), Kalaignar Karunanidhi Institute of Technology (Coimbatore), Karpagam College of Engineering (Coimbatore), M. Kumarasamy College of Engineering (Karur), Panimalar Engineering College (Thiruvallur), PSNA College of Engineering and Technology (Dindigul), Rajalakshmi Institute of Technology (Thiruvallur), Rathinam Technical Campus (Coimbatore), Saveetha Engineering College (Sriperumbudur), Sri Eshwar College of Engineering (Coimbatore), Sri Manakula Vinayagar Engineering College (Puducherry cluster), Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering (Sriperumbudur), Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering and Technology (Chittoor cluster linkage), Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering, Tirupati (Tamil Nadu admission pipeline), St. Joseph’s Institute of Technology (Chennai), and St. Joseph’s College of Engineering (Chennai).

The breadth of institutions from Tamil Nadu across all bands shows why the state continues to be regarded as India’s engineering education hub. Its institutions cover the entire spectrum — from globally benchmarked IIT Madras, to legacy state universities like Anna University, to large private universities such as VIT and SRM, and a network of high-performing autonomous and affiliated colleges.
