In a significant move to promote collaboration in the field of AI and Emerging Technologies, ‘India AI,’ an initiative under Digital India Corporation, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Meta India.
The MoU was officially signed by Abhishek Singh, CEO of India AI, and Shivnath Thukral, Director & Head of Public Policy, Meta in India.
The primary objective of this MoU is to establish a framework for cooperation and partnership between ‘India AI’ and Meta in the domain of Artificial Intelligence & Emerging Technologies. One of the key aspects of the agreement is to make Meta’s open-source AI models available for use within the Indian AI ecosystem.
Abhishek Singh, CEO of ‘India AI,’ expressed, “India is taking great strides in adopting digital technologies, and it is evident that AI and Emerging Technologies will play a crucial role in extending the benefits of technology to a wider population.
Through this collaboration with Meta, we aim to address significant challenges by leveraging cutting-edge AI technologies such as Llama and other open-source solutions.”
Sir Nick Clegg, President of Global Affairs at Meta, highlighted, “Meta’s open approach to AI innovation aligns with India’s leadership on digital matters. By providing businesses, startups, and researchers access to these technologies, we can create a world of social and economic opportunities. ‘India AI’ is an exciting initiative, and with close cooperation between the government and industry, we can strengthen India’s digital leadership and ensure that AI tools are tailored to India’s unique requirements.”
The collaboration between ‘India AI’ and Meta is focused on advancing research and development in AI & Emerging Technologies, with a special emphasis on achieving breakthroughs in AI technology and its practical applications.
Additionally, the two organizations are considering the possibility of establishing a Center of Excellence to foster the AI and Emerging Technologies startup ecosystem.
The partnership will leverage Meta’s AI research models like LlaMA, Massively Multilingual Speech, and No Language Left Behind to develop datasets in Indian languages, facilitating translation and large language models. The emphasis will be on low-resource languages, which will promote social inclusion, enhance government service delivery, and drive innovation using large language models, Generative AI, cognitive systems, and translation models.
Furthermore, ‘India AI’ and Meta are committed to improving accessibility to AI compute resources for researchers, startups, and organizations with limited means. They will encourage knowledge sharing and collaboration in AI & Emerging Technologies through various platforms such as workshops, seminars, and conferences.
Both organizations share a common goal of nurturing AI & Emerging Technologies skills and expertise among researchers, professionals, and students in India, thereby contributing to the growth of AI talent in the country.
In addition to their collaborative efforts, ‘India AI’ and Meta also aim to raise awareness about the potential benefits and risks of AI among policymakers, businesses, civil society, and the general public. They will work together to promote responsible AI practices by jointly developing comprehensive tools and guidelines.
