The GOBARdhan initiative by the Indian Government aims to turn waste into wealth using a comprehensive approach involving all government departments. It has been successful in attracting investments and producing positive outcomes by creating a supportive ecosystem for Compressed Biogas (CBG) and Biogas through various policies and incentives.
The Unified Registration Portal for GOBARdhan, launched by the Union Minister for Jal Shakti, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, has garnered significant interest from States/UTs and CBG/Biogas operators/investors. This portal streamlines the registration process for Biogas/CBG plants across the country.
Since its launch, over 100 under-construction CBG plants have been registered on the portal, indicating the flourishing growth of the CBG/Biogas industry. This sector is poised to play a significant role in India’s renewable energy portfolio. The government is actively supporting the industry’s growth and success through various policies and aims to establish it as a leading force in the renewable energy sector.
Within just 60 days, over 1200 plants, including 320 CBG plants and 892 Biogas plants, have been registered on the portal, spanning across 450 districts in the country. These plants have the capacity to process a substantial amount of organic/agricultural residue, producing CBG and Fermented Organic Manure (FOM).
The registration numbers are expected to rise further due to the government’s continued commitment to creating a supportive CBG/Biogas ecosystem. The government has introduced schemes, incentives, and amendments to promote organic fertilizers, ease marketing of FOM, and prevent double taxation on CBG blended with CNG.
CBG/Biogas operators/investors have welcomed these initiatives. Future policies, such as fiscal support for biomass aggregation and pipeline connectivity from CBG plants to city gas distribution grids, are expected to further encourage stakeholders’ participation across the value chain.
The GOBARdhan initiative aims to scientifically manage organic waste while providing resource and monetary benefits to rural households. It represents a collaborative effort between the Government of India, State Governments, private players, and other stakeholders to address waste management and renewable energy goals.
