Delhi gets first grid-connected rooftop solar plant

The ‘utility anchored rooftop program’ aims to maximize the utilisation of solar roof top potential.

New Delhi: By installing a 100 KW grid-connected rooftop solar plant, the Shiv Bhole Cooperative Group Housing Society in Dwarka has become the first society to go live as part of BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) ambitious ‘Solar City Initiative – Solarise Dwarka’.

The solar plant is first under the initiative launched on January 7 this year. The Solarise Dwarka initiative is being implemented by BRPL in collaboration with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ India) under its Indo-German Solar Partnership project.

The plant was inaugurated by Dr Wolfram Klein – Head of Division India; South Asia German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development in presence of Amal Sinha, CEO-BRPL.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Wolfram Klein, said, “It is quite encouraging to witness people participating in the energy transition in India: that is the only way to have a sustainable energy transformation; similar to what we saw in Germany”.

A senior discom official said that the 100kwp solar plant installed at the housing society would save roughly Rs 4500 annually for each of the 60 households in the society. The plant has been installed following RESCO business model. RESCO model entails providing electricity as a service at a cost identified through a competitive bidding.

The official further said that this path breaking ‘utility anchored rooftop program’ aims to maximize the utilisation of solar roof top potential in South and West Delhi.

Unlike conventional methods, under this program, roof top solar installations will be provided at a single point for the entire apartment complex. In the first phase (Solarise Dwarka), housing apartment complexes and societies are being targeted in Dwarka.
